Counseling can be life changing for depression

Depression is a very difficult thing to live with. A depressed person may feel a persistent feeling of sadness, or grief that comes and goes, or lack of energy or passion for life. Counseling can help tremendously.

It may be hard to focus and concentrate or life just seems boring and uninteresting. When depressed we may not have much of an appetite or just the opposite and find ourselves overeating. Sometimes depression involves overuse of alcohol or drugs.

There are severe forms of depression that require pharmaceutical medications, though these can be over prescribed.

Most people suffering from depression would highly benefit from good psychotherapy. It can be very difficult for a depressed person to open up and speak about their feelings, though it is almost always a relief to finally do so.

Causes of depression

There can be many causes for depression, stemming from childhood, family relations, genetic, biochemical or nutritional factors, trauma, major life changes, death of loved ones, or a combination of factors. Depression can be chronic, severe, mild or temporary. Counseling can be very helpful in all these cases. Here is a short list of things that can trigger depression:

A more personal look at depression

We are very affected by our families, especially our parents, and most particularly our mothers. Depression can begin in our mother’s wombs, where we are literally bathed in our mother’s moods, feelings and biochemistry.

Dysfunctional families with toxic communication, perhaps alcohol and drug abuse lead to children who grow up with depression and anxiety. These matters are complex. Such families often suppress feelings and children grow up to become adults with suppressed feelings that lead to broken relationships, addiction, depression and anxiety issues. We grow up and enter life feeling not good enough, struggling, blaming ourselves or others for why our relationships don’t work out.

Really, counseling and psychotherapy should be part of everyone’s life at least in early adulthood, to bring these matters to consciousness, clear them away and become free. I am grateful for every opportunity I get to help my client’s become free.
